Here, during the time of the Roman Empire, more than 50.000 spectators watched the famous battles of the Gladiators. Our guide will wait for you in front of the Colosseum, the largest and most famous amphitheater in the world. You will discover together what happened inside this “colossal!” building where about 50,000 spectators could enter to watch the gladiator shows offered by the Roman emperors until the fifth century.
You can visit the tunnel maze under the arena where gladiators and wild animals awaited their deadly confrontations. This underground area, called the hypogeum, housed cages for leopards,
bears, lions and elephants that were used in battle or as part of circuses and other performances. A pulley system, similar to an elevator operated by slaves, brought the animals to the arena floor for combat.
